Don’t give out your SSN Todd

Category: Meta News,RamblingsBrett @ 12:58 am

I can’t believe that dumb crazy bastard. Did he really think he wasn’t going to get hacked or sued. That’s the first thought that came to my mind when I viewed the adv. for life lock. From what I am reading about the calamity that is befalling Todd Davis it looks like I was right on both counts. ID – protection ads come back to bite pitchman – New York Times

Malware mp3 outbrake

Category: Meta NewsBrett @ 1:10 pm

McAfee researchers are calling it the most significant outbreak of the Trojan Downloader-UA h on PCs since 2005. I have been asked many times if p2p file sharing is safe. Now I have a direct case to prove my point that illegal p2p music/movie sharing is a bad idea. Both from a legal and security standpoint.

Microsoft turns customers into criminals

Category: Meta NewsBrett @ 12:16 pm

Microsoft is turning customers into criminals by telling them to back up their music libraries by burning tracks to CDs. They are given no receipts identifying dates, amounts, and titles purchased, so they have no proofs of purchase, in case of any future problems proving they own their tracks. When Microsoft shuts the doors on MSN music all the legitimately purchased tracks will become wasted bits. Unless consumers strip the DRM off the tracks. This act of course is considered copyright infringement by the RIAA and could land so unsuspecting consumers in hot water.

FireWire burning your security

Category: Meta News,New and Shiny,Web GoodiesBrett @ 4:40 pm

Adam Boileau a security reacher from New Zealand released source code for his Winlockpwn scripts. He first demoed the hacking physical-memory-DMA feature of Firewire at Ruxcon 2006 . Yes, thats right this is a feature of firewire that basically destroys the security feeling of any computer screensaver/lockscreen (Windows/Mac/ Linux) with a firewire port. This is more of a complex hack then say pressing the “escape” button in windows 98 but it gets the job done just as quick.

as adam puts it:

Yes, this means you can completely own any box who’s firewire port you can plug into in seconds.
